When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”(Matthew 9:36-38,New International Version 1984 (NIV1984)
Jesus had compassion on the lost. In the verse above, Jesus was looking at the crowds and knew that the people had no idea where who He was, they had no idea what their purpose in life was and most were living chin deep in sin. Sounds familiar doesn’t it? History repeats itself over and over again, and our generation is seeing this right now. The difference is, Jesus isn’t walking the earth right now teaching disciples and speaking in front of crowds.
So, what can be done about it? The answer is simple, but the challenge is not. We are His ambassadors on this earth. We are the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:27), Jesus is asking us to be the ones to reach the lost for Him. But it is more than that. We must see people the way Jesus sees people, and then we need to have the same kind of compassion for people that Jesus did.
Are we living up to Jesus standards of compassion? No, and we probably can’t even come close to exhibiting the compassion Jesus had. But, that does not excuse us from the fact that as a whole, Christians in America are not trying hard enough or not trying at all. We need to demonstrate this kind of compassion to everyone; the lost, the fatherless, the widows, the poor, the orphans, etc. It was written in Richard Stearns book, “The Hole in the Gospel” that if all Christians worldwide would just adopt one orphan, there would not be any children left without a family. That would be compassion that Jesus would want and approve of.
We all really need to work on this, to try to have this type of compassion. I really see the need for it in this world right now. Jesus saw the need, and He met it. Millions of Christians worldwide can do better at the attempt to achieve this. We can start today with allowing the love Jesus has for all of us to shine through His Body (Christ Followers) and we then allow Jesus to put this love into action through us. The world is growing cold, and the love of many in this world is already there.
Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold…( Matthew 24:12,New International Version 1984 (NIV1984)
Father God, please fill us with Your love and help us to put Your love and compassion into action in this world. Let this love and compassion heat this world up and melt the cold hearts of those You talked about in Matthew 24:12. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
