For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.(Romans 6:23,English Standard Version (ESV))
In 1969 Charles Manson made the cover of Life magazine. How ironic is it that an anti-Christ murderer makes the cover of a magazine called Life. I think it was around this time and this generation that the respect, love and will for all to have an abundant life was lost on millions.
There were people fighting for women’s right to murder their children through what society called abortion. Serial killers like Charles Manson were murdering innocent people; his intent was to try to start Armageddon. He didn’t spend enough time reading the scriptures and praying to God for complete understanding of His word. If he did, he would have understood life much better.
The abundant life isn’t what some of the prosperity gospel preachers are talking about either. God will provide for our needs, but to tell people that God will give you the house you want, the job you want or the car you want is not what God promised. The abundant life is living life to the fullest in God’s will. Being fully obedient to Him and preparing for eternity in heaven. God never promised the life Hollywood tries to impose on us, but promised that if we trust in Jesus, we would have eternity in Paradise.
Again, God promised no prosperity to anyone. Jesus did tell us in John 15:18-20 that “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. If they persecuted me, they will persecute you”. Have hope though, even when life gets hard on this earth, just know that eternity in heaven will be pain free, disease free, evil free, death free, and full of the love of Jesus.
So, what is life? We it’s our chance to prepare on this earth for eternity in heaven. Our chance to raise children, reach the lost, learn what struggle is, pain, disappointment and even death is. We learn that now because those things won’t be in heaven. We learn about what imperfection is before we enter perfection in the Kingdom, so we can appreciate what God has created for us there. God’s definition of life answered George Harrison’s question from his song “What is life” 2, 000 years before George wrote that song. It’s too bad that George didn’t pay attention before he wrote that song to figure out that God gave him the answer before he was born. Enjoy life on earth, enjoy the simple things in life, and to live it to the fullest, and don’t chase after money and material things. Follow Jesus to eternal life.
God, help us to understand what you intended for each of us for our lives. Help us to appreciate what you have provided for us and what you have given us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
